first trip to Batam and Singapore
i went to Batam island on October 15 for work meeting and went touring to Singapore on October 17, and return to Jakarta from Batam on October 18
Batam seemed stranded in some area, the tour guide told me that a lot of industry closed down during the monetary crisis in the late 90s.
in Batam you can get cheap branded stuffs (fake or original), like bags, perfumes, cell phones, and other electronics, some of my colleagues bought Blackberry with a very low price, i think they’re illegal smuggled goods from Singapore
i went to singapore by ferryboat, and went on a city tour by bus (with a tour guide)
my first impression was it’s a very clean and tidy country, very modern, everyone is discipline
but later on i thought, everything is expensive there, money oriented, some of the people aren’t friendly to Indonesian visitors, i was convinced i won’t be happy living in singapore
i even met a rude indian salesman who insulted me as Indonesian, ironically it happened at the end of my trip at the Harbour Front, as i was waiting for the ferry to return to Batam (my flight to Jakarta departed from Batam)
the whole trip was ruined by that little incident, i’m still very upset even now
i stayed in Lucky Plaza Apartment in Orchard road, the room is hostel class, with rate starting from S$ 60 (twin bed room with shared bathroom)
everything was already arranged by the tour leader
the tour guide recommended to stay in Tresor Tavern, a backpacker hostel in Little India, for the next time i visit singapore
i’ll go back to Batam, but i’ll think twice to visit Singapore again ![]()
